Investment Tracking
Your 401(k), IRA, and brokerage accounts are part of your financial picture too. HOB's investment tracking lets you record contributions, track current values, and see your net worth grow. This guide covers everything from simple 401(k) tracking to managing multiple investments.
Investment Accounts vs Regular Accounts
Investment accounts in HOB are special - they work differently from your checking or savings accounts.
What makes investment accounts different:
- Track individual holdings: See each stock, fund, or crypto you own
- Automatic price updates: Current values update based on live market prices
- Current market values: See what your investments are worth right now
- Separate from budget: Investment transactions don't affect your monthly budget
Types of investment accounts you can track:
- 401(k) and 403(b) retirement accounts
- Traditional and Roth IRAs
- Brokerage accounts (Vanguard, Fidelity, Robinhood, etc.)
- HSA investment accounts
- 529 college savings plans
- Cryptocurrency portfolios
Adding an Investment Account
Let's set up your first investment account - we'll use a Roth IRA as an example.
To add an investment account:
- Click Investments in the navigation
- Click Add Account
- Enter the account name (e.g., "Vanguard Roth IRA")
- Select the account type: Investment
- Enter the cash balance only (uninvested cash in the account)
- Optionally add notes (account number, institution, etc.)
- Click Create Account
💰 Cash Balance Only!
When creating the account, enter only the uninvested cash sitting in the account - not the value of your stocks, ETFs, or funds.
You'll add your holdings (stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, crypto) in the next step. This allows HOB to automatically update their values based on current market prices, giving you accurate net worth and performance tracking.
Adding Holdings (Stocks, Funds, Crypto)
Now let's add the individual investments inside your account.
To add a holding:
- Click on your investment account
- Click Add Holding
- Enter the ticker symbol (e.g., VTI, AAPL, VTSAX)
- Enter the number of shares you own
- Click Add Holding
💰 Automatic Price Updates
HOB automatically fetches current prices for stocks, ETFs, and mutual funds. Your holdings will update throughout the day to show current values!
🪙 Cryptocurrency Support
Want to track Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other crypto? Just use the crypto ticker symbols:
- • BTC-USD for Bitcoin
- • ETH-USD for Ethereum
- • ADA-USD for Cardano
- • SOL-USD for Solana
The format is always: [CRYPTO]-USD (e.g., DOGE-USD, MATIC-USD)
Recording Investment Transactions
Track contributions, purchases, sales, and withdrawals in your investment accounts.
💵 Contribution (Adding Money)
When you deposit money into your investment account (like your monthly 401k contribution).
Example: Transfer $500 from checking to Roth IRA
📈 Buy (Purchasing Securities)
When you use money in your investment account to purchase stocks, funds, or crypto.
Example: Buy 10 shares of VTI at $220/share ($2,200 total)
📉 Sell (Selling Securities)
When you sell stocks, funds, or crypto and the money goes back into your investment account cash.
Example: Sell 5 shares of AAPL at $180/share ($900 total)
💸 Withdrawal (Taking Money Out)
When you move money from your investment account to your bank account.
Example: Withdraw $1,000 from brokerage to checking
Viewing Current Values
HOB automatically updates your investment values throughout the day based on current market prices.
What you can see:
- Current value: What your holdings are worth right now (updates automatically)
- Number of shares: How many shares/units you own
- Current price: Latest market price per share
- Total portfolio value: All investment accounts combined
📊 Example
Holding: 100 shares of VTI
Current price: $225/share (live price)
Current Value: $22,500
💰 What HOB Tracks
HOB shows current market values - what your investments are worth right now based on live prices. This gives you an accurate net worth.
HOB does NOT calculate gains/losses or track performance over time. For performance analysis, use your brokerage's reports. HOB's focus is giving you a complete, current snapshot of your finances.
Simple 401(k) Tracking
Don't want to track every individual fund in your 401(k)? You can keep it simple.
The simple approach:
- Create an investment account called "401(k) - Employer"
- Don't add individual holdings - just track the total value
- When you contribute, add a "Contribution" transaction
- Once a quarter, update the total account value manually
This gives you the big picture (net worth, total invested) without the complexity of tracking every fund allocation.
✅ Best for
Employer 401(k)s with limited investment options, accounts you don't actively trade, or if you just want to track net worth without diving into details.
Detailed Portfolio Tracking
For brokerage accounts or IRAs where you actively invest, track every holding for maximum insight.
The detailed approach:
- Add all your individual stocks, ETFs, and funds as holdings
- Record every buy and sell transaction
- Let HOB automatically update current values
- Track your total portfolio value in real-time
This is perfect for:
- Self-directed brokerage accounts
- Roth IRAs where you choose investments
- Cryptocurrency portfolios
- Actively managed portfolios
Dividends and Distributions
When your investments pay dividends or make distributions, record them as income to your investment account.
To record a dividend:
- Add an investment transaction
- Select type: Dividend
- Select the holding that paid the dividend
- Enter the amount received
- Note whether it was reinvested or paid as cash
💡 Automatic Reinvestment
If your dividends automatically buy more shares (DRIP - Dividend Reinvestment Plan), record it as a dividend followed by a buy transaction for the new shares.
Net Worth Tracking
Your investment accounts are a major part of your net worth. HOB calculates this automatically.
Net Worth Formula:
Net Worth = (All Account Balances) - (All Debts)
Checking + Savings + Investments - Credit Cards - Loans
As your investments grow and you pay down debt, your net worth increases. Track it over time to see your financial progress!
Best Practices
Update regularly but not obsessively:
Monthly updates are fine for most people. Daily checking leads to anxiety about market fluctuations. You're investing for years, not days.
Track contributions separately:
Keep a category for "Retirement Contributions" in your budget. This shows how much you're actively investing each month.
Don't panic over short-term losses:
Your investments will go down sometimes. That's normal. Focus on long-term trends, not daily fluctuations.
Verify ticker symbols:
Double-check that you entered the right ticker. "VTSAX" (Vanguard Total Stock Market) is different from "VTI" (the ETF version). Wrong ticker = wrong price data.
✅ The Goal
Investment tracking in HOB is about seeing current values and net worth - not detailed performance analysis. For historical charts and performance metrics, use your brokerage's reports. HOB gives you the accurate current snapshot you need to track overall financial progress.
Quick Tips
- 📈 Automatic price updates: Stock and crypto prices update automatically throughout the day
- 🪙 Crypto tracking: Use BTC-USD, ETH-USD format for cryptocurrency
- 📊 Simple or detailed: Choose the tracking level that works for you
- 💰 Track net worth: Investments + cash - debt = financial progress
- 🔄 Monthly updates: Don't obsess over daily changes - check monthly
- ✅ Verify tickers: Wrong ticker = wrong data (VTSAX ≠VTI)
- 💵 Cash balance separate: Enter uninvested cash when creating the account, holdings separately
