Budget Basics
Budgeting in HOB is based on zero-based budgeting: give every dollar a job. This isn't about restriction - it's about intention. You're still spending money on what matters to you, but you're doing it on purpose. This guide will walk you through creating your first budget.
What is Zero-Based Budgeting?
Traditional budgeting is passive: "I made $5,000. I spent $3,000. I saved $2,000."
Zero-based budgeting is intentional: "I made $5,000. Here's exactly where every dollar goes..."
Income - Budgeted Expenses = Zero
Every dollar gets assigned before the month starts
This doesn't mean you spend everything! "Savings" is a budget category. "Emergency Fund" is a budget category. "Retirement" is a budget category. You're giving those dollars a job too - just a different job than "groceries."
📝 Example
Income: $5,000
Rent: $1,500
Groceries: $600
Gas: $200
Entertainment: $300
Emergency Fund: $500
Retirement: $500
Other expenses: $1,400
Total Budgeted: $5,000 ✅
Before You Budget: Know Your Income
You can't budget money you don't have. Start by knowing exactly how much income you'll receive this month.
If you have consistent income (salary):
Easy! Budget your expected monthly take-home pay. If you get paid twice a month, add both paychecks together.
If you have variable income (freelance, hourly, commission):
- Conservative approach: Budget based on your lowest month in the last 6 months. Extra income becomes savings/debt payoff.
- Average approach: Budget based on your 3-month average. Adjust as the month progresses.
- Wait-and-see approach: Only budget money after it arrives. Update your budget when each payment comes in.
💡 Pro Tip
Budget your NET income (what hits your bank account), not your gross salary. Taxes and deductions are already gone - don't budget money you never see.
Creating Your First Budget
Now let's build your budget month by month. HOB makes this easy.
To create a budget:
- Click Budget in the navigation
- Select the month you want to budget (start with the current month)
- You'll see all your categories listed
- For each category, enter how much you plan to spend or earn
- Watch the "To Be Budgeted" number at the top
- Keep adjusting until "To Be Budgeted" = $0
✅ The Goal
When "To Be Budgeted" shows $0.00, you've given every dollar a job. Your budget is complete!
Budget in This Order
Not all spending is equal. Budget in priority order so the most important things are covered first.
1. The Four Walls (Essentials)
Food, shelter, utilities, basic transportation. These keep you alive and housed.
2. Obligations
Debt payments, insurance, childcare. Things you're legally or morally obligated to pay.
3. Financial Goals
Emergency fund, retirement, savings. Your future self will thank you.
4. Quality of Life
Entertainment, dining out, hobbies. This is where budgeting gets fun - guilt-free spending!
If you run out of money before reaching #4, you need to either increase income or decrease expenses in categories 1-3.
How Much to Budget Per Category
Don't know where to start? Here's a rough guideline based on your monthly income:
- Housing (rent/mortgage): 25-30% of income
- Transportation: 10-15%
- Food (groceries + dining): 10-15%
- Utilities: 5-10%
- Insurance: 10-15%
- Savings/Investing: 10-20%
- Debt payments: 0-20%
- Personal/Entertainment: 5-10%
- Everything else: 10-15%
These are guidelines, not rules! Your budget should match YOUR life, not someone else's percentages.
💡 Better Approach
Look at your last 2-3 months of actual spending (from your transactions). Use those real numbers as your starting point, then adjust based on your goals.
Adjusting Throughout the Month
Your budget isn't set in stone. Life happens. HOB makes it easy to adjust as you go.
When to adjust your budget:
- Overspent in one category: Move money from another category to cover it
- Unexpected expense: Reduce other categories to make room
- Didn't spend as much as budgeted: Leave it (it'll roll over) or move it to another category
- Extra income arrived: Budget it immediately - give it a job!
🔄 Example: Budget Adjustment
You budgeted $200 for gas but spent $250. Your car broke down unexpectedly.
Solution: Move $50 from "Entertainment" to "Gas". Now both categories balance.
This is called "rolling with the punches" - adjust as life changes!
Copying Last Month's Budget
Most of your budget stays the same month-to-month. Don't start from scratch every time!
To copy a previous budget:
- Go to the Budget page
- Select the new month you want to budget
- Click Copy from Previous Month
- All budget amounts from last month are copied over
- Make any adjustments needed (raise that went into effect? cut cable?)
- Done!
✅ Time Saver
After your first month, budgeting takes 5 minutes - just copy and tweak. The hard work is done!
Common Budgeting Mistakes
❌ Forgetting irregular expenses
Car insurance paid every 6 months? Budget 1/6 of it every month. Christmas gifts? Budget year-round.
✅ Solution: Create sinking funds - save a little each month for big annual expenses
❌ Being too restrictive
$0 for entertainment? You'll burn out and quit budgeting entirely.
✅ Solution: Budget for fun! Even $50/month for "whatever you want" makes budgeting sustainable
❌ Not budgeting fast enough
Money hits your account and you spend it before budgeting it.
✅ Solution: Budget new income the day it arrives. Don't wait for the 1st of the month
❌ Comparing to others
"Dave Ramsey says 10% on food!" But you have 4 kids and he doesn't.
✅ Solution: Budget for YOUR life, not someone else's ideal
❌ Giving up after month 1
Your first budget will be wrong. That's normal!
✅ Solution: It takes 3-4 months to dial in your budget. Stick with it!
Tracking Progress
As you spend throughout the month, HOB automatically tracks how much budget you have left in each category.
The budget page shows:
- Budgeted: What you planned to spend
- Spent: What you've actually spent so far
- Remaining: What's left to spend
Green numbers: You're under budget (good!)
Yellow numbers: Getting close to your limit (slow down!)
Red numbers: Over budget (move money from another category!)
